As Jamie xx continues to rise through the echelons of musical accomplishment, encounters with bona fide legends like Gil Scott-Heron are almost inevitable. Mercifully his rework of Scott-Heron's 'NY Is Killing Me' (taken from 'I'm New Here') is a gem, placing the clapping diwali-riddim-blues of the original in the freshest LDN dancefloor context. In a complete overhaul of the track, Jamie shakes out fractured phrases of Gil's vocals over a bed of plush Bashment subs shackled by a minimal framework of shuffling halfstep patterns. Icily melodic refractions keep the mood suspenseful and suggestive, before the emotional alleviation comes with twinkling marimba keys in the closing stages. It's a special cut, we're sure you'll agree.
