Tarwater's thirteenth album - their first in a decade - is a dappled, psychedelic victory lap, featuring contributions from Alva Noto, Masha Qrella, Schneider TM and actor Lars Rudolph..
Ronald Lippok and Bernd Jestram have been making music together for decades - they were in a punk band together before they even formed Tarwater in the mid '90s. And although their last album, 'Adrift', appeared in 2014, they've kept themselves busy, collaborating with Iggy Pop, Masha Qrella and Immersion and penning music for German radio plays. 'Nuts of Ay' picks up where the duo left off; their light-hearted but serious approach - honestly, who else could make a successful, moody cover of 'I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles' - is still very much in check. The duo cast a wide net for their lyrical content this time around: the dubby 'Trapdoor Spider' is based on a poem from English writer Milner Place, while 'All Nuns' is taken from Derek Jarman and the closer 'Everybody Had a Hard Year' is written by John Lennon.
Tarwater's connecting thread is their spartan, hybrid instrumentation, teased with just enough psychedelia to fray the edges. Carsten Nicolai's glitchy textures peek through their organ drones and terse rhythms on 'On Waves and Years', and Morr's own Masha Qrella duets with Lippok on the gloriously gooey 'Down Comes the Goose'. Needless to say, if you're a fan of electronic pop that takes its humor deadly seriously, 'Nuts of Ay' is well worth a closer look.
