Welsh-Brazilian gabber cyborg Lady Neptune makes a heavy artillery-sized dent with 'Noz', dressing overdriven hard dance kicks in anthemic synths, hoover bass, rave organs and snatched vocals. Nu-metal energy with a Bang Face smiley pasted on top?
Previously half of lo-fi punk duo Dog Legs, Moema Meade's descent into electronic mayhem started in 2018 with "MADONNA KEBAB // BROWN MADONNA" a set of syrupy covers that barely hinted where they might go next. By the time her next cover record appeared in 2020 she was fully down the plughole, fabricating unruly gabber versions of the "Star Wars" Imperial March and System of a Down's 'P.L.U.C.K.' on "Anarchy Gabber Covers".
'NOZ' is Lady Neptune's most destructive set yet, lavishing distorted TR-909 kicks over 'Dominator'/'Mentasm' hoovers assembling vintage hardcore sounds with a punkish nod. It's messy stuff, but never too grotesque to get in the way of its soundsystem thrust - the album sounds relentlessly heavy, and sports a fresh mastering job from Rashad Becker to make sure it does max damage >> tracks like brickwall slammer 'Masterer' sound as if they're about to launch from your speakers as familiar organ stabs burst around snare rolls and eye-poking drums.
'Tell Me' is probably our pick of the bunch - a carnivalesque anthem that splices silky vocals ("Tell me that you need me") into a cauldron boil of hoover sounds and choppy drums. Is it festival season yet? mad one.
