Aussie composer Madeleine Cocolas taps into the widescreen, sound design-heavy space inhabited by Roly Porter and Tim Hecker on this impressive, highly textured full-length.
Following quickly from her faded, vocal-rich "Spectral" full-length, "Northern Storm" scratches a different creative itch, starting off powerfully on the title track with doomy kick drums, serrated bass and wailing, dissonant synths. It feels right at home on Room40, slotting in nicely alongside Robin Fox's robust modular symphonies and Lawrence English's field recording-guided cinematic droners.
'Machine Talk' is even more convincing, shifting away from the bombast and focusing on ghostly electrical pulses and unsettling tape hiss, before closing track 'The Sound Between' steps completely into the void, a muddy haze of distant vocals, air conditioner hum and fluttered shoegaze cloudiness. Subtle and glorious.
