Boomkat Product Review:
Wowsers, well you don't see a lineup like this on many sleeves do you? David Garland the acclaimed Downtown Music Gallery associated composer, guitarist and radio host of WNYC's acclaimed 'Spinning on Air' has obviously got some sickening connections as he drags Diane Cluck (possibly my favourite female vocalist around right now), Viking Moses, Sufjan Stevens, Mira Romantschuk (of Mi and Lau), Greg Saunier (of Deerhoof) and many more into the fold to create a quite effortlessly great album. I mean with that lineup you pretty much haven't got a choice but to do something great I suppose, but what sets Garland's songs apart from the competition is his incredibly technical songwriting skill, the songs change, melt and morph like little else you'll hear - at times they sound so complex they almost lose the poppishness and then a hook comes back, and all is forgotten. Just listen to the Diane Cluck led 'Diorama' or the gorgeous 'Every Bird' and tell me there's not something almost inexplicably beautiful about Garland's work. It doesn't sound like much else out there either, even with this amount of well known collaborators the production and the way the record has been put together sets it well apart from the rest of the scene. A hugely enjoyable and unceasingly strange record that is a far cry from the lazy folk records we seem to becoming accustomed to - highly recommended!
