Boomkat Product Review:
Full frequency-scanning noise ace from Akin Fernandez a.k.a. the Irdial Discs founder and curator under his Beautyon moniker.
As it reads on the inlay; “Beautyon: Minimalism is out. Simplicity is in”. We can read into that, Fernandez was bored with fanciness and wanted something much rawer when then this was created and released circa 1997.
It’s a challenging listen, saturated with pronged, atonal noise attacks in a freeform, deconstructed manner that sounds like he had fun making it, although your doctor would probably admonish you for subjecting your ears to such stuff.
However, the noise in No02 is quite different to the kind of macho mid-west American screech attacks that have come to dominate the term over the last decade or more. It’s closer in form and probing tone to Florian Hecker or Marcus Schmickler’s caustic earfloss, i.e. more defined and ductile, allowing space and dynamic into the sound sphere rather than red-lining everything and ripping its shirt off at the first opportunity.
