WE ARE WINTER’S BLUE AND RADIANT CHILDREN
"NO MORE APOCALYPSE FATHER"
Godspeed's Efrim Manuel Menuck, Big Brave's Mat Ball and Ada's Jonathan Downs and Patch One join forces for a suite of queasy electronic lullabies and gruff, brick-wall distortions.
The original sketches for 'NO MORE APOCALYPSE FATHER' were written by Menuck and Ball during a particularly harsh Montréal winter, intended to warm the cockles as the ice forms outside. Once they'd finished their outlines, they called up Downs and Patch to build the ideas into fully-fledged compositions, and We Are Winter's Blue and Radiant was born. Understandably given the crew involved, it's a politically charged record that considers "witnessing bleakness from a place of safety", and the music follows the barbed themes.
Opener 'Rats and Roses' is about a city hit with a rat infestation, and Menuck's voice rises tentatively, cracking over VHS synth pulses, organ vamps and shrill feedback wails. And on the title track, the four piece crank up the volume, coating their composition with chalky distortion that amplifies Menuck's anguished screams.
