Boomkat Product Review:
Remate is one of those characters who fits into the 'classically-trained musician turned singer-songwriter' bracket. His label tells us this background taught him how to maintain good posture while playing guitar and strengthen the wrists whilst sitting at the piano. Of course, such details, are mere trifles, and are almost certainly of minimal concern to any of you, because with singer-songwriter albums there's really no more use in dispensing that sort of background information than there is in telling you that he's influenced by Bob Dylan and Neil Young (well, duh). With these sorts of records the songs should tell their own stories, and given that No Land Recordings is a whopping two disc set, this Remate chap must have quite a few to tell. This beardy Spaniard records in English, and just about manages to get away with it (it's always dangerous when someone writes in a language they're not entirely fluent in), though tellingly, sounds more comfortable when singing other people's songs (his covers of Daniel Johnston's 'Joy Without Pleasure' and Nick Lowe's 'The Beast In Me' are both excellent). There's no disputing this album's musical credential however: 'Kitty And Her Beautiful Lady' is a delightful mandolin romp and 'Toxic Love' is truly haunting.
