Boomkat Product Review:
Nisht Azoy (Not Like This) is the second album from the Godspeed related Black Ox Orkestar. Again taking Jewish traditional music forms as their starting point, the band develop these themes into something far more contemporary, yet deftly avoid both the 'retro' and 'fusion' tags so often found in music of this kind. The vocals here are much more restrained then their debut 'Ver Tanzt?' and only feature on half the tracks, yet even the instrumentals tell a deep, sad story punctuated with remorse, regret and romance. Obviously steeped in Jewish history, politics and folklore, this is much more than a cultural collision, this is a journey through people's lives and emotions - an intensely human experience. Most importantly though, "Nisht Azoy" is one of the finest releases on Constellation for quite some time, attaching itself nicely to the newfound popularity of outsider music that utilises world themes, with labels like Sublime Frequencies and Fonal leading the way. If the idea of post-rock variations fed through the traditions of Klezmer, Hassidic instrumentation, Balkan and Eastern European cultures sounds like your kind of thing - check this out without delay.
