New school B-More bangers from Night Slugs’ new hook-up, CalvoMusic, augmenting the classic style with results comparable to Leonce’s updates of regional US club music
Kicking NS back into play for 2021, the ‘Nights Into Mornings EP’ tees up four mutant B-More sizzlers built on the typical bouncing bass drums and chopped stabs, but tweaked out with a deeper, technoid flow and streaked with sharp synths. With its finely calibrated groove and layered pads, the brooding banger ‘House of Helix’ is a dead strong example of CalvoMusic’s depths, while the likes of ’Shake My Ass’ bring it ruder with squeaky bed springs, slicing breaks and slick electroid bass work, and big highlight ‘Atlantis Level 1.5’ keeps it perfectly balanced between bubbling bass and flighty synth motifs primed to get ‘em dancing on air in the club, with ‘Ga$ton Rasta’ perhaps coming closest to Leonce’s devilishly tight drum programming.
