Boomkat Product Review:
Begushkin is the slightly unpronounceable moniker of Brooklynite Dan Smith and on 'Nightly Things', his debut album released on the ever reliable Locust label he shows an ability to sink right into the current swathe of folksy singer-songwriters with an eye towards times past. This also slides nicely into the Locust catalogue, nestling in amongst their recent re-issues showing that the new generation of artists have a similarly innate ability to craft other-worldly folk gems with a foot rooted in genuine folk tradition. I think that's what Smith has overall that sets him apart from the British singer-songwriters I am beginning to loathe, there's that luscious family aspect, the feeling that he is writing for his friends and for himself rather than in the hope of getting featured on some kind of high profile advertising campaign or another. Folk music isn't a get rich scheme, and in 'Nightly Things' Dan Smith demonstrates that he has genuine heart - let's just do something about that name eh? Sounds like black metal if you ask me... Gorgeous.
