Boomkat Product Review:
‘Night Sky’ is Aussie composer Sophie Hutchings’ second album and artfully confirms her place amongst the likes of nouveau classical darlings Nils Frahm, Peter Broderick and Johann Johannsson. With a breathy sense of pace and space, Hutchings slowly unfolds delicately woven structures utilizing piano, harmonium, strings and percussion. Setting her apart from her peers is an unusually poignant darkness, which puts her more in line with ECM or even Rune Grammofon releases than lighter material you might expect to emerge from elsewhere. Compelling and warming, Hutchings’ compositions might have err towards the darker nights, but within the melancholy is a deep thread of hope. Gorgeous music, and one for any piano music lovers out there – don’t sleep.
