I know there are a lot of them to sift through but the Sublime Frequencies releases really are something special, and this particular one is about as special as they come. Recorded in Bali, this shows field recording at it's most potent; instead of being merely a collection of random recordings from various sources this feels like you are actually walking from place to place hearing people play, practice or talk with each other. Also we are not confined strictly to music - we hear the actual sound of the night in Bali, crickets humming, footsteps across dry plants and the sound of birds in the distance. The main kind of music you will find here is of course Gamelan, but this is a different kind of Gamelan than you might expect to come from Bali's western neighbour Java, this is fast and frenetic and to hear it recorded in this way is a revelation. The sort of energy in this music is simply mindblowing and impossible not to succumb to, we are hearing a snapshot of this island at night and although I haven't been there this is about as close as you can possibly get. It feels like you are walking around the island alone, peering in at another culture and unlike so many collections of world music you end up feeling like you have learnt something at the end of it. Rather than being a collection of artists who managed to make it to Western-friendly labels, this is music as it happens by the people who really love it. So utterly essential!
