Boomkat Product Review:
Cult indie favourites Herman Dune return on cheery form with Next Year In Zion, which at last count was their twelfth album. This one features help from The John Natchez Bourbon Horn players (famed for their work with Beirut and Arcade Fire) and The Wave Pictures' David Tattersall on electric guitar. Tattersall greatly energises tracks like 'My Home Is Nowhere Without You' and 'When The Sun Rose Up This Morning' with his sprightly fretwork, supplying some on-the-spot blues lines for 'Someone Knows Better Than Me', which is all rendered with an authentically vintage dryness. The tone of the songs on offer here comes close to Jonathan Richman or perhaps Silver Jews, balancing out lyrical sophistication and classical musical traits with a sense of humour and a slightly dishevelled performance style that never fails to charm.
