Boomkat Product Review:
I’m absolutely stumped at how Keiji Haino gets through his days… he’s now released literally hundreds of cds on dozens of different labels and fronted more bands than most musicians would have played alongside in a lifetime; he must be recording all the time.
When all of us are sleeping, he’s there busying himself with mediaeval instruments, oddball effect boxes and detuned guitars, torturing his way through sound until he stumbles across something worthwhile (which by the look of his catalogue is quite a frequent occurrence). Seeing him work is quite an experience, as he moves from sound to sound, exploring not only our boundaries but his own.
This latest disc from Tzadik is a collaboration with the mastermind behind Ruins, Yoshida Tatsuya who is claimed to be the undisputed master drummer of the Japanese underground. The two titans have clashed before on occasion, but never this successfully; Haino’s wails and guitar abuse is a pleasure to witness, and the percussion never falls into the background, instead it's upfront, loud, fast and intense.
