Boomkat Product Review:
New York's Elk City is a band made up of singer/songwriter Renee LoBue, drummer/producer Ray Ketchum, and newbies Sean Eden (formerly of Luna) and Barbara Endes (ex-Lovelies). New Believers was recorded after extensive touring with big-name indie types like The Walkmen and The National and finds the band in fine voice, especially on anthems in-waiting like 'Cherries In The Snow' and 'Totally Free', on which Elk City sound like a cross-pollination of various nineties indie rock heroes from The Breeders to Lush. There's a wealth of jubilant pop material to latch onto here, from the organ-driven 'Little Brother' to the bar-room boogie of 'You Got Me', with one or two key slow jams like 'Nighttime' adding a little depth and texture to the album's jangling essence. Highly appealing no frills indie pop - good stuff.
