Boomkat Product Review:
Medical delve deep into Sean McBride’s archives for this weighty triple helping of forgotten tracks, sketches and unfinished Martial Canterel work from the turn of the century.
The ‘Navigations’ retrospective series began in earnest in 2013 with an inaugural edition for Electric Voice Records, gathering together odds n’ sods from Sean McBride’s earliest years of recording under the Martial Canterel name. Given his prolific output under the MC name over the past thirteen years it’s no surprise to find out the Xeno & Oaklander man would have plenty more unreleased cuts and sketches in his locker.
The ten tracks from that debut edition of ‘Navigations’ are collated alongside another two volumes of Martial Canterel material for release on Medical Records, adding up to a rather hefty 30 synth burners. McBride’s prodigious output as Martial Canterel feels right at home on Seattle’s Medical Records, the West Coast’s pre-eminent destination for wistful waves of the minimal and synthy variety. Utilising a stripped back set up, McBride excels at crafting an idiosyncratic brand of minimal synth whose structured pop is almost always doused in a sense of melancholia, even at its most bracing moments.
