NIИ’s live keys man returns to Mute with a new suite of signature, smouldering circuitry.
A decade since the foundational ‘Forse’ volumes and subsequent sides with Lawrence English, Merzbow and Daniel Avery, acclaimed composer and custom synth builder Alessandro Cortini yields the results of an immersive installation commission for Sonar Lisboa Festival in ’22, held across four floors of the Museu de Lisboa’s Moagem. Refined for its debut performance at Atonal 23, Berlin, the five-part movement of ‘Nati Infiniti’ has evolved to emphasise its rough hewn, atmospheric, emotive grip articulated via a custom set-up that has made his sound so singular these last few years.
Composed on the Strega synth he co-designed with Make Noise, ‘Nati Infiniti’ is impeccably rendered with all the charred harmonic textures intact in-the-mix by Marta Salogni, engineer and mixer of choice for Björk, Depeche Mode, Sampha etc, to ideally fulminate its melancholic heft on the mind. The five untitled pieces play out panoramic sketches of an unknown but instantly recognisable landscape, one soused in sheet rain and given to roiling plays of greyscale colour between the wheezing, organ-like tone of its first part, thru the gnawing dissonance of the 2nd, to let the storm break in its 3rd, and allow a muggy sunlight to break thru in the resolution of the 5th.
