Boomkat Product Review:
Ryuichi Sakamoto pays emotive tribute to the world changing nuclear bomb attacks on Japan in his soundtrack to Nagasaki: Memories of My Son, a 2015 film about a family that was tragically affected by the events of August 9th, 1945.
Using a mixture of traditional and classical eastern and western instrumentation to meditate on the subject with respectful tact and an achingly poignant sense of minimalist reserve and elegiac majesty.
The project started after Sakamoto was approached by the movie’s director, Yogi Yamada, and lead actress Sayuri Yoshinaga, after previously collaborating the latter. Since 2012, the two have been participating in events where Yoshinaga recites poetry written by A-bomb survivors to Nakamoto’s piano accompaniment.
