Boomkat Product Review:
Brooklyn beat mutant J. Albert pursues the supremely blunted ‘Pre Formal Audio’ with a full tilt into near-beatless ambient zones with a strong hypnagogic appeal for fans of Actress, Huerco S., uon
With ‘my rave ended yours just began’ Albert’s work arrives at a logical conclusion following the increasingly woozy and OOBEy dimensions of his preceding albums, EPs, and singles. It’s a sound full of midnight stasis and lost to its mazy thoughts, communicating in a language of mumbly, scuffed pulses and smoky air that appears to pick up where Actress’ most smushed and sluggish works leave off.
He’s at best, or at least most expansive, in the 12 minute centrepiece of scudding, billowing ambient chords and distant woodblock percussion ‘000sj’, but that one’s arguably best consumed within the flow of it all, sloping from something like Mika Vainio gone Eski on ‘Box Music’, thru the weightless grot of ‘A Future’, to a sort of smudged ambient jazz impressionism in ‘amygdla’ and ‘open’, and the album’s masterstroke of decaying keys in ‘Interpretive dance.’
