My Light, My Destroyer
NYC singer-songwriter Cassandra Jenkins follows 2021's acclaimed 'An Overview on Phenomenal Nature' with an even stronger set of folksy reflections, field recordings and tempered electro-pop experiments.
Jenkins was ready to throw in the towel even before she'd toured her last album. It was intended as a swan song of sorts, and when she'd finished two years of shows she felt as if she'd burned out for real. She scrapped her initial sketches for 'My Light...', starting over with the help of L'Rain producer/engineer Andrew Lapin and went back to her earliest inspirations: Annie Lennox, Tom Petty, Radiohead, PJ Harvey and the Breeders.
The finished album captures this spiritual self-reflection; Jenkins spritzes up the record with airy memories, throwing 'Shatner's Theme', a collage of field recordings, and 'Betelgeuse', a jazzy interlude that features her mom Sandra, a science teacher, between alt-country groover 'Aurora, IL' and the smokey highlight 'Delphinium Blue'. It's pop music, no doubt, but Jenkins has the range.
