Boomkat Product Review:
While on these pages Oklahoma might be best known for being home to the esteemed Digitalis label, there's plenty of other musical experimentation going on there, although you might not know it. Colourmusic hail from Stillwater, OK and make a peculiarly blown-out brand of nouveau hardcore. It's still chunky, fast and loud, but there's a sense that Ryan Hendrix and Nick Turner know more about production and electronics than most of the 'regular' hardcore bands. Ambient textures and pads flow throughout the tracks, and the sizzling guitars are backed with punchy, brutal drums - occasionally soundscapes threaten to take over the record before being reigned in and falling into the background once more. It's a bizarre mix but one that just about works, when the sexed-out disco of 'Dolphins & Unicorns' cuts in, it feels like you almost expected something like that to happen.
