Boomkat Product Review:
Rolf Julius is acknowledged as one of the foremost modern sound artists, having previously exhibited alongside work by John Cage, Nam Jun Paik, Bill Fontana, Milan Knizak, and David Tudor. The second release in Western Vinyl's Small Music series compiles two pieces; 'Music For A Distance' composed between 2003-2009 and the shorter installation piece 'Music In A Corner' created in 1983. The former is an engrossing 40 minute tract of microscopically detailed hi end tones ranging from insectoid, cicada-like chatter and alien FM signals to peripheral rustles and distant crowd noise and underpinned with a hovering, lurking low-end drone, all drawing the ears focus and spatial perception out of line. It was borne as a live performance in 2003 at the Donaueschinger Musiktage in Germany and has since been refined in the studio and performed in Europe, Asia and North America. The shorter 7 min piece 'Music In A Corner', conceived and performed at MoMA PS1 in 1983, sounds like a bees scream amplified and infinitely delayed, laying the foundation for the his later work.
