Muscut XXX, Test Pressing IV
Muscut celebrate thirty releases with another fab comp, this time featuring Jake Muir, Felicity Mangan, Nikolaienko, Andrew Pekler, Felix Kubin, and plenty more.
Muscut's fourth expansive compilation is their best yet, an expertly-curated set of blue-hued experiments that'll no doubt appeal to anyone who's been paying attention to the label over the last few years. Bristol's Memotone starts things off nicely with the restrained orchestral mystery of 'False Cobra', before Giuseppe Ielasi drops an untitled guitar jam that's expectedly meditative and typically cinematic. Then it's time for Andrew Pekler's 'Neon Nocturne', a brief, early electronic-leaning set of hazy synth squiggles, and Roméo Poirier's druggy, sub-aquatic 'Haut Lieu'.
The great Nikolaienko impresses with the tape-mangled 'Ambianta VI', building on his ace 'Nostalgia Por Mesozoica' and 'Rings' full-lengths, and Felix Kubin proves he's still the wackiest guy in the room with the indescribably eccentric 'Spukflattern', a rugged assemblage of sci-fi drones and alien honks. Berlin-based bathhouse sensualist Jake Muir offers us a breather with the dubby, liquid ambience of 'Spindle', and Felicity Mangan's 'Wings' is another reminder of her concréte skills, twisting exquisite environmental recordings into disquieting chirps. Spencer Clark dusts off his Star Searchers moniker once more on the blunted 'Previsual Stingray Motion FX', and Tarotplane plays us out with 'We Stutter Between', a sufficiently blue-hued finale.
