Boomkat Product Review:
Bittersweet blend of outsider electronics and rugged club hunches from Toronto-based Muscovite Anna Pavlova aka Soft Matter on Egyptrixx’ Halocline Trance label.
Prenseting her music as “a response to the fatigue of digital burden and embrace of of self-ownership”, Soft Matter exerts her agency in two sharp cuts of mutant, discordant electronics and bouncing, stony drums that speak a similar sonic language to Arca, Lotic, Elvin Brandhi or 33EMYBW.
‘Muscle Performance’ is the wilder of the pair, writhing with a fractious footwork quality while the top lines skid across in calligraphic graffiti. ‘Reality Bites’ is the more broodign one, swanging in a sort of gutted dembow style layered up with steepled choral motifs and needling trance top lines.
