Boomkat Product Review:
New album from backpack hip-hop anti-hero turned electronic pop ensemble, Why?. It actually does a good job of bridging the whiny rap sound of classic Anticon with a more organic, playful pop sensibility, at times recalling vintage Beck, at others top-drawer, low-slung boom-bap, at others even the harmonised laptop-indie bliss of Animal Collective. Yoni Wolf's persistently nasal vocal delivery won't be to everyone's taste - wasn't it ever thus? - but his sonic and conceptual ambition is to be applauded. He's cited A Tribe Called Quest, The Lion King, Deliverance, Neil Young and Outkast as influences on the record's conception, and the results are as giddy and kaleidoscopic as you'd expect from such reference points.
