Boomkat Product Review:
This one’s been in the works for a while – a tidy collection of beat-oriented material from Spectrum Spools/Public Information alum No UFOs. All made using the legendary MPC these six jams are not only a great representation of Konrad Jandav’s genre-hopping style but also a hint of what may come. There are traces of Andy Stott’s patented ‘knackered house’ in there somewhere, but Levin’s style is even more horizontal, and even more frazzled somehow. His lo-bitrate clipped beats make up the backbone of the record, but aren’t the primary component – each track is rhythmic (no doubt due to the construction) but Levin has molded the sounds into crumbling statues of dubbed-out synthesizer and echoing percussion. Whether exploring the humid ambience of ‘Vermalung at 89.7 BPM’ or the bouncy Alpha Pup-isms of ‘Causa Suite at 3.75 ips’ Levin seems equally at home, and that’s a rare skill that makes us very excited about what might come next from No UFOs.
