Boomkat Product Review:
One-time Dirty Projectors member Nat Baldwin teams up with Grizzly Bear's Chris Taylor (who assumes production duties) for this unique singer-songwriter venture. While most songwriters might wield a guitar or piano, Baldwin chooses a double bass as his main instrument, sounding like a lower register Arthur Russell across several of these songs, notably the magnificent opener 'Lake Erie' with its choppy bowing rhythms and drifting, almost Buckley-esque vocal. while songs like 'Te Felled Trees' harness a focussed pop format, Baldwin does depart from the safety of that format on the avant-garde detuning and violent scrapes of 'Look She Said', which to some extent bears evidence of the time he spent studying under Anthony Braxton. Adding a sense of poignancyand suggesting opportunities missed, the album's artwork shows Nat's highschoo; basketball MVP award from ten years ago. Apparently the young artist decided to dedicate his twenties to jazz and songwriting rather than sports, and for the listener at least, that was a good choice.
