Boomkat Product Review:
The players: Will Oldham, Robert Arellano, Red Fellows, Colin Gagon, Smoking Joe Prop.
With yet another slight moniker adjustment, Will Oldham returns on the heels of his brilliant new album with what may be his best work in years. And they're not even his songs. Comprised of six covers from some of the most eclectic sources you could imagine, the songs are brought to new life with a full band playing louder, harder and faster than we've ever seen from the Palace troupe.
Recorded in Shelbyville, KY by Paul Oldham, the band soars through favourites and obscurities from John Phillips, PJ Harvey, Bill Withers, The Renderers, John Holt and Tim McGraw. Oldham fans have come to expect nothing less than dark, reflective tunes of heartbreak, so it is only fitting that the thread binding all of these songs is the theme of lost and inhibited love. But without songs about death added to the mix, this becomes Oldham's "love songs" record by default. Lovely.
