Boomkat Product Review:
For this remix project the Metatronix label has taken tracks by dancehall icons Sizzla, Capleton and Anthony B and recruited a number of electronica producers to give the source material a thorough overhaul. The tone is set by DMX Krew's extremely accommodating reworking of Cappleton's 'Respect': the vocals remain in tact in all re-productions while the beats are approached afresh, though often end up in the familiar rhythmic formats of the dancehall sound. The Bug serves up a predictably sympathetic remix of Anthony B & Dejah's 'More Power' (a track used as the basis for the majority of the remixes here), working his distorted beats into a slightly more slippery, hip hop-friendly format than usual. Funckarma stray furthest from the original with their jumbled up mangling excursion, which comes across as a more radical version of the R&B-meets-IDM exercise 'Take Control' in which Sizzla's vocals get a good rough housing at the hands of Eedl. This Supersoul-curated project hangs together surprisingly well, with no one really sounding as though they've strayed too far beyond their respective comfort zones, yet the results are simultaneously coherent and genre-defying throughout.
