Boomkat Product Review:
Obits are some kinda rock supergroup, gathering members of their number from Pitchfork, Drive Like Jehu, Edsel and Hot Snakes and unsurprisingly the band make an attractive rear-facing racket. ‘Moody, Standard & Poor’ is their second record and continues their mission statement to throw down sharp, tight garage rock that stays the right side of being retro and reverent. The band might be looking towards the oldies for reference, but their sound feels relevant somehow, I’m not sure if this is because so much other rock music sounds so tired and turgid right now, but it reminds me of a time when rock wasn’t so darned disposable. The drums are dusty and distant, bass is high up and proud in the mix, and the twin guitars cut through with the well-worn riff-heavy intensity. This is rock music for connoisseurs.
