Oh this one's good - Jessica Smurphy is back with 'Montegod Riddim', an experimental dancehall nugget that sounds like Mike Will Made It collaborating with Equiknoxx. Even better, Bokeh has curated a trio of vocal versions from the Duppy Gun family.
It was one of 2020's better surprises when Jessica Smurphy returned in October with the hard-as-nails "Spheres of Consciousness". The Mexico City-based producer had taken some time away from music to concentrate on her health, so it was a rare moment of joy to hear her breaking musical boundaries again. Now she's back with another surprising drop, a bright, pneumatic dancehall cut graced with three (!) collaborations with the Duppy Gun family - Any Voice, Prapastar and I Jahbar & RDL.
Smurphy's original riddim is a bizarre and brilliant mutation of organ house, 2011 R&B (think Kelly Rowland's seminal 'Motivation') and soundsystem-ready dancehall that more than stands on its own, but gets a signal boost from Duppy Gun, just cuz Bokeh love to spoil us. Newcomers Any Voice and Prapastar weave breathless autotuned flows in-and-out of Smurphy's rolling beats, while I Jahbar & RDL move into radio singalong mode with memorable, oscillating bars.
