Boomkat Product Review:
**Double gatefold** Mere weeks after the debut blast on their own label, Mats Gustafsson (tenor/bass sax), Ingebrigt Håker Flaten (bass) and Paal Nilssen-Love (drums) aka The Thing drop another double slab of angular free jazz blat. 'Mono' was recorded at Headgap Studios in Melbourne, Australia while the trio toured in Winter 2011, and covers everything from Sonny Rollins compositions ('Alfie's Theme' & 'The Bridge') to their takes on traditional Norwegian arrangements ('Bruremarsj') and brand new pieces rendered in, as you mighta guessed, mono. We're hardly experts in this field, but the energy, tension and dexterity of the trio on this recording is totally captivating and defiantly "free" to combust in all directions at once, only just tethered by a masterful sense of control that keeps us there, right on the edge of the room, in session, willing them to go wilder. Recommended with a fine bottle of single malt and a good stereo.
