Boomkat Product Review:
Giegling demonstrate why they are Resident Advisor’s favourite label of 2016 with a full family gang-bang featuring smart tracks by Edward, Vril, Kettenkarussell, DJ Metatron, Pom Pom, plus a few new names to boot.
Whilst understandably compared to other big german house labels such as Perlon or Kompakt for their levels of international-quality housing, Giegling effortlessly buck that model by way of their more abstract tendencies, which are strewn across all three platters and 15 tracks inside.
Case in point is the variation between tracks by regular label heavyweights Edward and Vril, with the former offering the deeply raw and slinky hustle of Check Check, whereas Vril offers the ear-bugging abstract buzz of Otolith, establishing a chimeric label aesthetic where, on the one hand daydreamy shufflers such as Map.Ache’s Happy Birthday, Herr Koreander’s woozy Derive or the very Wolfgang Voigt-alike See & Feel from Jacques Bon exist on a level with, say, on the other hand, the scratchy gnarl of Pom Pom and a blank-eyed industrial beating from the mysterious Loewe.
And let’s be fair, there aren’t many other German house labels we can think of who can do that, and pull it off so stylishly.
