The band’s first release since the tragic death of founding member Beau Velasco in 2009, ‘Michel Poiccard’ finds the band angry but invigorated. This is hardcore music, with its roots in the US punk of the late 70s and early 80s, but like their no-wave predecessors they seem to feel just fine about injecting the guitar-led sound with elements of electro and hip hop. Hell, Spank Rock and Diplo pop up on the record, so if that isn’t wide ranging enough for a punk band I don’t know what is. Even without these collaborations the album sounds right up to the minute in terms of relevance; while their influence might come from Bad Brains and The Ramones, their sound is delightfully fresh and reeking of Brooklyn. This is a band that aren’t afraid to have fun with their craft, and despite the tragedy that has befallen them they have emerged victorious.
