Boomkat Product Review:
Now this one is utterly spannered, and in the best possible way. UK act Aufgehoben see themselves as rock deconstructists apparently and with 'Messidor' as evidence I'd not be one to disagree. Apparently they take audio from live improv sessions and then chop, screw and layer the sounds in the studio. and that's certainly what it sounds like. Instruments, clanks and percussive loops appear from nowhere but are squeezed beyond recognition occasionally sounding like the oppressive hi-volume crunch of Prurient, and occasionally sounding like the metallic groans of Hair Police's more atmospheric moments. This is industrial noise at its finest, but there's also a strange thread connecting all the pieces and distancing this record quite far from the world of those aforementioned noisy buggers. I suppose it's the fact that the band have one foot in the rock and improv scene that gives them this - and the more you listen to the music the more it sounds like the bastard offspring of Throbbing Gristle and This Heat, yep it's that good. Utterly mental and not for the faint hearted, but with enough meat to keep the most sadistic of you trembling for more.
