Boomkat Product Review:
Sumptuous and worldly yet beautifully debut album of shapeshifting dreampop from the Young Magic trio. Now based in New York, the group, comprising Australian expats Isaac Emmanuel and Indonesian-born vocalist Melati Malay, coalesced in early 2011 around shared travelling experiences and a broad palette of musical influences - from Brainfeeder hip hop to psychedelic soul and West African rhythms. On the ten tracks of 'Melt' Isaac and Melati share vocals, often glossolalic coos and echoic half-heard fragments, but also with more discernible, pop wise verses which filter in and out of the sun-dazed mix. The best example of this is surely the opener, and previous single B-side 'Sparkly', setting their sound as endearingly lush rather than cloyingly naif, with naturally flowing rhythms, glinting guitars and heart-lifting vocal harmonies, before they add some rougher texture with the animalistic synth call and churned, Fly-Lo-like rhythmic pitch of 'Slip Time', and 'You With Air' almost recalls the ecstasies of say Prince Rama or Toro Y Moi.
