Boomkat Product Review:
The ever-versatile Morgan Geist proves some wicked latin finesse on his long-overdue return to Environ with 'Megaprojects One'.
Where his last 12" was titled 'Detroit' this one could be subtitled 'Miami/NYC/Chicago', weaving threads of freestyle synth flare with Nuyorican soul and latin house flavours in a tight and super-infectious play on late '80s/early '90s styles.
'Darkstar' isn't really that dark, but it is crammed with kinky fake-out machine fills, whistle and lush synth motifs, with a powerful sub holding it all down. And if you want to extend the pleasure we'd advise buying two copies and working it up with the more stripped down 'Trackstar'.
On the other side he brings syncs up some killer roto-toms, rimshots and kicks in the crispy fruit of 'The Idiot Track', and gives a fine nod to that fine seam of Latin funk that informed some of Chicago's rudest joints with the 727 rhythms of 'Clarence'.
