Boomkat Product Review:
Rotterdam-based synth minimalist and visual artist Ian Martin returns to Seattle's brilliant Further Records. His fourth album - after records for Bunker and Legowelt's Strange Life - 'Mechanical Rain' was created using a stripped down setup of two synthesizers and no drum machines "due to enforced space limitations", and evokes the desolate, industrial ambience of empty office blocks and deserted urban spaces. His synths hum like fluorescent lighting and breathe like air vents, inducing hypnotic, stoic states for affected imaginations to roam cold concrete stairwells and the endless corridors of the mind. The relatively lo-fi, slightly queasy nature of his work finds certain parallels with Ekoplekz and his fellow countryman Machinefabriek, but there's also something noirish and mysteriously unresolved at play which should seduce more inquisitive minds.
