Mechanical Music for Brighter Days
Glaswegian producer Scott McKay follows last year's taught "Grey Skies in a Dear Green Place" 12" and a run of plates on the Dixon Avenue Basement Jams imprint with this heavy duty six tracker for Dark Entries. Electro, dungeon techno, slinky acid - properly damaged party starters for lo-lite dreams.
For the last few years, McKay has been impressing with his keen understanding of tough-as-nails dancefloor world-building. This latest set is his most convincing effort to date, jumping from idea to idea but retaining a solid thru-line of sci-fi wooziness and 4am headmash body movement. Opener 'D10S' is a Detroit electro-via-Glasgow monster with Drexciyan synths over cheeky hip-snapping percussive twists, while 'El Bimbo de Oro' heads straight to Klubnacht with its industrial strength 4/4 and k-hole FM wavez.
'New Cycles' fires back further into rave history, but the best's saved for last: 'Tinfoil' hat is a slithering acid monster with a kick drum that's been engineered for gut-churning nightmare destruction. Clever clever.
