Boomkat Product Review:
The full-length follow-up to Emiliana Torrini's much loved Fisherman's Woman, Me & Armini presents itself as a less introspective affair. The title track - the first single to be lifted from the album - was an indicator of this: it's a far more upbeat affair than the predominantly acoustic songs of her previous LP (the very fact that it has a beat at all is fairly notable, in fact), and similarly the electrified chords of 'Heard It All Before' and 'Jungle Drum' expand on Torrini's established musical vocabulary. 'Dead Duck' is especially notable, making overt use of electronics and digital production techniques, but there's still plenty of room for the rickety, unplugged songcraft of old, as heard on 'Hold Heart', 'Big Jumps' and 'Birds', all of which just about manage to stay the right side of Katie Melua. The production should be commended too: it exudes warmth from start to finish, and while the instrumental components tend to be quite measured and are often relatively simple, the performances are all captured in lively detail. Recommended.
