Boomkat Product Review:
Stones Throw throw something quite special your way with the labels first release from Mayer Hawthorne. It's kind of a spoiler to tell you that this guy is only 29 and white, because once you've listened to the samples you'll surely need to verify this for yourself as it sounds like some long lost studio production from the Soul music's glory days of 1966-74. Growing up in Ann Arbor, a suburb of Detroit, Michigan, Hawthorne was apparently hooked on the rich Soul, Jazz and Black music heritage particular to that corner of the world, devouring Barry White, Curtis Mayfield and Smokey Robinson while many of his peers were probably listening to Eminem. The story becomes even more incredible when we learn that the gifted falsetto is also responsible for most of the instrumentation on this 2 track 12", and that he never intended on becoming a singer until this release! The two tracks have caught the ear of everyone from Funk-perv Mark Ronson to Radio 1's Gilles Peterson and soon to be many, many more. Ever wanted to hear Motown with a Dilla twist? check this!
