Boomkat Product Review:
What the…?! Sofrito’s Island Series pull out two incredible rhythms from Madagascar, following up editions from Haiti, Martinique, Cape Verde.
In keeping with the series’ brilliant concept - almost any music lover should know that certain island nations can turn out the maddest, syncretic styles; just think of Jamaica, Japan, Cuba, even GB - this one is a perfect case in point, running the supremely intricate, lip-bitingly strong ruff ’n tumble groove and blazing organ/vocal combo of Vetson Androy’s Mavandeza on the top side, and relieving the tension in swingeing style with the knitting needle patter, psyche flutes and grubbing guitars of Taratasy Maitso by Jaojoby, which, like the other side, would be almost unplaceable unless we were told.
Totally unique, kinda unmissable stuff!
