Glorious transmission from Four Tet's Text imprint, a dedication to Steve Reid from Rocketnumbernine including a remix from Kieran Hebden himself. The duo of Rothko's siblings, Ben and Tom Page, comprise Rocketnumbernine and 'Matthew & Toby' is their first vinyl release. It's a superbly executed fusion of spiritual jazz and Krautrock drive, pairing softly blurred synthline elevation with adroit drumming, able to pivot between pulsing, motorik linearity and tumbling jazz breaks with a lithe flow of energy. In the course of 12 minutes they conduct themselves with a tangibly organic synchronicity, embellished in some part by the restrained but noticable cushion of production from their buddy, Mr Hebden. His remix follows onthe flip, catering more to the dancefloor and the DJs in his inimitable style, paring the track back to a superb blend of subtly curving sinewaves and a padded bass pulse opening out into an ecstatic jazz techno opus.
