Boomkat Product Review:
Stars frontwoman and Broken Social Scenester Amy Millan releases her new solo album for Arts & Crafts, setting seven originals against four covers. Possibly the most immediately striking thing about the album is its disarmingly lovely production, held together by arrangements that embellish the smoky intimacy of Millan's voice with close-up recordings of strings and brass. Talking points include a pedal steel enriched, countrified version of Death Cab For Cutie's 'I Will Follow You Into The Dark', a chilly, skeletal take on Richard Hawley's 'Run For Me' and the folked-up 'Fix Up Look Sharp'-alike backbeat of 'Day To Day'. Millan's own songs resonate most strongly however, and the opening couplet of 'Bruised Ghosts' and 'Low Sail' are especially stirring.
