Boomkat Product Review:
Now three albums into their career, Detroit-born Awesome Color return with another classy long-player, arriving after six years spent touring with mentors like Sonic Youth and Dinosaur Jr. In the finest tradition of the Motor City's garage-bred rock & roll this power trio pack a heavy punch that fits in with all the classic genre tropes whilst avoiding any gratuitous descent into nostalgia or kitschness. Blistering opener 'Transparent' is especially successful, thrashing through almost heavy metal-like riffs and bluesy solo licks, only for its follow-up, 'Flying' to switch styles altogether, instead opting for an articulate, cleaned up jangle that's not a million miles away from the poppiest material spun by their Sonic Youth patrons. Later on in the album the band return to their Stooges-loving ways with the likes of 'Vision' crunching through soaring, fuzztone guitars and punishing snare drums. By no means is Massa Hypnos a reinvention of the established Awesome Color sound, but it is a sturdy consolidation of the groundwork laid on the first two records.
