Boomkat Product Review:
Released to mark the much anticipated return of Funkstorung's long dormant Musik Aus Strom imprint, the cunningly titled 'Mas Confusion' boasts a selection of tracks selected by Messrs Fackesh, De Luca and Funcken, including cuts from : Metamatics, Funckarma, Quench, Mr Projectile, Autophonic, Stars As Eyes, Michael Fackesh, Adam Johnson, Lusine Icl and the very excellent Xela. Despite being produced, packaged and marketed with the usual K7 flair for commercialism and gloss, this is actually an outstanding album from start to finish, surfing the deeper and floatier end of crunchy IDM. Lee Norris sets the scene perfectly with the gorgeously soulful 'Giant sunflowers swaing in the wind' - delicate tinkle music that has become a Metamatics trademark, complete with his unique, signature melancholy. Xela's 'Streetlevel' will act as a fine introduction to those of you unfamilliar with his work - with a debut album imminent and some interesting collaborations in the pipeline, Mr Xela is one of our big tips for next year, diversifying himself into textured soundscaping terrain all the way back to the gently dismantled IDM displayed on this killer track. It's actually quite difficult to pick out any particular highlights here as one of the greatest strengths of this compilation is its flow - from Adam Johnson's deep, melodious soundscaping to Funckarma's squashed beats and Lusine's typical layered brilliance, this is a fine, involving IDM listen, sitting perfectly alongside Toytronic's excellent 'Neurokinetic' compilation from a couple of years back. Lovely.
