Boomkat Product Review:
For her third album, Marnie Stern has raised her game all over again, sounding consummately at ease with the utterly unique sound she's been developing ever since her In Advance Of The Broken Arm debut album. It'd be hard to think of any other artist who achieves such a remarkable symmetry between sheer technical ability and credible songwriting. Amidst a flurry of two-handed tapping runs Stern always manages to assert a strong and highly personal artistic presence. 'For Ash' is a real tour de force, tumbling through wildly different, segmented passages while a stellar rhythm section, comprising ace drummer Zach Hill and Women bassist Matthew Flegel, stirs up a breathtaking rhythmic counterfoil to Stern's guitar. Slowing down a little, 'Transparency Is The New Mystery' comes close to power-ballad territory, cranking out towering chord changes and professions of self-doubt (a mantra of "I'm not enough") amidst a surprisingly cogent network of shifting time signatures. 'Female Guitar Players Are The New Black' and 'Gimme' are pretty incredible too, bringing '80s stadium shred into the 21st century without an ounce of irony or creative compromise.
