Boomkat Product Review:
Hot kwaito rhythms and balmy vocals from South Africa, 1992, sourced and dusted down for reissue by the excellent La Casa Tropical, beloved round these parts for their Patience Africa 12”
Formed by friends Patience, Violet & Pinky, PVP recorded ‘Malende’ with Emmanuel Diale on the desk, cooking up eight songs that are only now seeing light of day. The mode is melodic, good-times Kwaito and bubblegum, full of swaying vocal harmonies driven by mid-tempo grooves in that hard-to-resist South African style adjacent to US, UK and Euro house styles of that era.
To play favourites, we’re really feeling the natty A Guy Called Gerald vibes on ‘Go Tsofala O Ratang’, and the pendulous garage-house pressure of ‘Uli Bambe Lingashoni’, and definitely the slow jam R&B flex of ‘Go Down’, but for fans of this sound, the whole album is a winner, and finally available anywhere, not to mention SA.
