Making Money (4AD B-Sides and Rarities)
Long-running Scottish indie poppers Camera Obscura rake together their best B-Sides and rarities on "Making Money", including remixes from Richard Hawley and Jim Noir, and cover versions of 10cc, Bruce Springsteen and others.
Formed in 1996 in Glasgow, Camera Obscura have kept up a reliable presence on the indie rock scene since, issuing an acclaimed series of albums on 4AD before going on hiatus in 2015 following the death of keyboardist Carey Lander. The band got back together in 2018, and have assembled "Making Money" to honor Lander's memory, pooling their most difficult to find tracks and building them into a coherent album. Anyone who's enjoyed the band in the past shouldn't be surprised that even their offcuts are worth hearing - there's no filler here, and while odds 'n sods sets can often go horribly wrong, "Making Money" is enjoyable from beginning to end. The cover versions are the most obvious draw: a session version of 10cc's classic 'I'm Not in Love', a 2009 recording of Bruce Springsteen's 'Tougher Than the Rest', a cover of Jim Reeves' 1964 Xmas classic 'The Blizzard', a version of Gene Autry's 1936 hit 'You're The Only Star In My Blue Heaven', and a Richard Hawley remix of a cover of Hawley's own 'The Sweetest Thing'.
Elsewhere on the album, there's a sublimely loungey Jim Noir remix of 'French Navy' that's worth the admission price alone, and the delightful offcut 'Swallows' that catches the band at their silkiest and sweetest. Lovely stuff.
